MultiView 2000® & MultiView 2000 Server Edition Support

How To:  Set Up LPR/LPD for RS6000 (AIX 3.2.5)

IMPORTANT: You must be logged in as root to do the following.

To allow MultiView DeskTop LPR to use the LPD facility on the host:

  1. Run “smit” on the Unix host.
  2. Choose “Spooler (Print Jobs).”
  3. Choose “Manage Local Printer Subsystem.”
  4. Choose “Local Printer Queues.”
  5. Choose “Add a Local Queue.”
  6. Enter the name of new printer queue, e.g., “support
  7. Enter the name of the device, e.g., “lp0”

A new Local printer called support on device /dev/lp0 is now added. At this point it should be possible to test the printer from Unix, e.g., “lp -d support /etc/group”

Now that the printer has been added to the spooler system it is necessary to allow devices on the network to use it. First, ensure that the hostname and IP address of the client is specified correctly in the /etc/hosts file. These should be the names used for the PCs running MultiView DeskTop which will print to this host.

  1. Run “smit” again on the Unix host.
  2. Choose “Spooler (Print Jobs)”
  3. Choose “Manage Remote Printer Subsystem”
  4. Choose “Server Services”
  5. Choose “Host Access for Printing”
  6. Choose “Add a Remote Host”
  7. Enter the name of the PC’s, e.g., markpc.

This adds the PC name to the /etc/hosts.lpd file which allows the PC to use the Unix print spooler system. The Unix spooler system is now set up correctly.

Now configure an LPR printer on the PC running MultiView DeskTop and test accordingly. For this example an LPR printer should be added on the PC named markdpc which prints to a queue called support.
