FutureSoft Warns UK Of Dangers Of Windows Vista Security ‘Mono-Culture’

Investment in Security Development to Decrease Predicts FutureSoft

HOUSTON, TX-March 5, 2007

FutureSoft Inc., a leader in endpoint security management solutions, today warns that security professionals should welcome the implementation of Microsoft’s new Vista operating system (OS), however should not rely on the new operating systems security alone.

Windows Vista provides a number of new security features that are designed to make Windows Vista-based PCs more secure and online experiences safer. These enhancements are helpful in raising the level of security to home users, which is of particular importance with regard to the constantly growing threat from botnets – collections of systems infected with malware that runs autonomously, unknown to the user – as these typically consist of home-user systems.

Even though Vista provides a good base-level security for enterprises, there are risks with the position that Microsoft has taken: attempting to integrate too many security products on the desktop. FutureSoft warns that due to the rapid rate at which security threats evolve, it is somewhat shortsighted for businesses to rely purely on Vista’s OS security features.

“Relying on a single vendor, even the operating system manufacturer, may well provide too little depth in desktop security, presenting attackers with a more limited target set for attacks,” comments FutureSoft Security Product Manager, Geoff Webb. “Furthermore, it may ultimately reduce incentives for third-party development in competitive security technology, which in the long run could lead to a dangerous security mono-culture.”

This mono-culture, FutureSoft explains, will allow attackers to focus on a smaller set of products and in doing so will exploit their vulnerabilities, which could potentially lead to more aggressive, wide-spread infections and attacks.

Explains Webb, “Businesses should welcome the advances that Vista brings to the corporate desktop however they should also continue to ensure their network is as secure from IT threats as possible by integrating additional third party solutions.”
