DynaComm i:mail Takes the Bite Out of the W32/Bagle.aq Worm

Update to category definitions provides rapid response to emerging virus threat

Houston, TX-August 9, 2004

The latest version of the Bagle worm, known as W32/Bagle.aq, is starting to arrive in increasing numbers in corporate mailboxes around the world. This mass mailing worm contains its own SMTP engine and is able to spoof sender information and seek out P2P shared directories to propagate itself through a variety of mediums.

The good news for users of DynaComm i:mail is that FutureSoft has already released category definitions that will prevent the current Bagle variant from being delivered to end-users. DynaComm i:mail provides administrators with a rapid response for mailing worms because it can be quickly configured to recognize the characteristics of the worms, even before virus vendors have released full updates for their anti-virus code.

As is always the case, the most effective method for providing protection from worms like Bagle.aq is to configure DynaComm i:mail to either strip or quarantine any mail containing executable files. In the case of Bagel.aq the worm is embedded in a .zip file with names such as price.zip, price2.zip, newprice.zip and several others.

All of these can be automatically stripped from incoming mail by DynaComm i:mail, or alternatively, sent to a quarantine file for review by the mail administrator, ensuring the worm never reaches the mail server or end-user mail boxes. When combined with an up to date virus scanner, this kind of layered defense provides the best protection from mail-borne malicious code.

Rick Mansel, President and CEO of FutureSoft said of this update, “Worms like this variant of Bagle reinforce the need for multiple layers of content security in the enterprise. Threats emerge and change so quickly that relying on just one type of security solution is not effective. Viruses scanners are essential, but so are powerful mail filters which can provide administrators with real-time visibility of mail traffic, and the power to react quickly.”

DynaComm i:mail is one part of FutureSoft’s DynaComm i:series Enterprise Content Security suite. This unique set of products manages Internet access and e-mail traffic and performs internal, file surveillance activities while providing organizations with a reliable and cost-effective method to manage content across the enterprise.
